Tech Note: ACT Test Review

Physical Performance in Coatings

Paint tests resulting in qualitative and quantitative measurements of performance, with and without Vitrocote® were performed by ACT Laboratories Automotive Testing Division. Automotive grade paint was supplied for the testing by a major North American paint manufacturer. Physical, chemical and environmental test standards and methods for high performance paints have been employed in the testing matrix.

PHYSICAL TEST RESULTS – 2% Vitrocote® vs. Control

RESISTANCE TO TABER ABRASER TEST

Test Method: ASTM D4060-01
Weight: 1000 Grams
# of Cycles: 3000
Results: Control Panel – Wear through to primer @ 2270 cycles
Vitrocote® Panel – Wear through to primer @ 2867 cycles (26% improvement)

RESISTANCE TO CAR WASH TEST

Test Method: GM 9600P (20 Degree Specular Gloss)
Exposure: 5, 10, 15 and 20 minutes
Results: Control Panels – Remaining gloss after test 1.8
Vitrocote® Panels- Remaining gloss after test 2.2 (22% improvement)

HUMIDITY RESISTANCE TEST – ADHESION AND BLISTER

Test Method: GM 4465P – Deionized Water Fog
Conditions: Standard Dwell – 96 hours
Results: Vitrocote® Panel – No adhesion failure or blistering after 384 hours (4X standard)

THE FOLLOWING PASS/FAIL TESTS WERE ALSO SUCCESSFULLY PASSED:

Chip Resistance Test
Test Method: GM 9508P

Tukon Hardness Test
Test Method: ASTM D1474-98

Scuff and Mar Resistance Test
Test Method: GM 9150P

Solvent Resistance Test
Test Method: GM 9509P

These testing results demonstrate that Vitrocote® has NO adverse effects on paint and coating resin chemistry. All tests either met or exceeded specifications and performance requirements. These independent results substantiate other customer reports of improvements to physical properties with zero adverse effects on the resin systems.
